Riols

A typical village in the Haut-Languedoc region, nestled in the Jaur Valley, Riols moves to the rhythm of the seasons that bring it to life. With just a few hundred residents, quiet streets, and air scented with mimosa, cherry blossoms, chestnuts, and schist, it’s exactly the kind of place you’re looking for when you really want to unwind.

What to do

Riols in practice

  • 01

    The Jaur

Rising in Saint-Pons-de-Thomières, the Jaur offers natural swimming spots in summer and riverside paths year-round. Fishing is permitted on a catch-and-release basis.

  • 02

    A perfect base

Halfway between Mazamet and Bédarieux, 10 minutes from Saint-Pons-de-Thomières, Riols is ideally placed for exploring the whole of the Haut-Languedoc.

  • 03

    On the Passa Païs

The greenway runs alongside the village. Cyclists and hikers meet there year-round, and Le Clos d'Audio has been certified as a “Bicycle-Friendly” (Accueil Vélo) establishment to welcome them in the best possible conditions.

  • 04

    Peace and quiet above all

Little to no traffic, no noise. Riols is the kind of place where your stay truly begins the moment you set your bags down at Le Clos d'Audio.

A little further afield

Around Riols

  • Outdoor activities

You are right in the heart of the Montagnes du Caroux outdoor activity hub. A wealth of hiking routes awaits, from the easiest family walks to the most challenging trails. Trail running circuits, mountain-bike tracks, horse riding…

  • Towards the Minervois

Heading south from Riols, the landscape shifts register: chestnut forests give way to garrigue scrubland and then vineyards. Saint-Chinian, about twenty kilometres away, is an appellation well worth a stop at the winemakers. Further still, Minerve is a mineral village perched on a rocky spur at the junction of the Cesse and Brian gorges — a former Cathar stronghold at the heart of the Languedoc garrigue.

  • Olargues

Eleven kilometres from Le Clos d'Audio, clinging to a rocky outcrop in a tight meander of the Jaur, Olargues is dominated by its 12th-century castrum, from which the view over the Caroux and Espinouse mountains is breathtaking. Listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, it deserves at least half a day: cobbled lanes, covered passageways, the Pont du Diable and its legend, and the chestnuts of Olargues — an unmissable local treat.
