The Passa Païs
Stretching nearly 80 kilometres, replacing the former Mazamet–Bédarieux railway line, the Passa Païs (pronounced 'PA-SSA-PA-EE-SS') crosses the Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park in all its diversity: forests, Mediterranean mountain, railway tunnels and viaducts. And Le Clos d'Audio sits right at the halfway point. In French, it's called 'Voie Verte Passa Païs'.
What awaits you on the route
- 01
Mazamet, western end
The vertiginous footbridge over the Arnette valley, a.k.a 'La Passerelle de Mazamet', opens onto the medieval Cathar village of Hautpoul, perched on the clifftop above.
- 02
Saint-Pons-de-Thomières
Just a few kilometres from Riols, Saint-Pons is the natural stop for this stretch of the route.
- 03
Olargues
Olargues - see photograph - announces itself with its Eiffel-style bridge, which you cycle across before entering this classified village.
- 04
Bédarieux, eastern end
Bédarieux marks the transition to the Avants-Monts and the pays de l'Orb.

From Riols: both directions
Le Clos d'Audio sits at the halfway point of the Passa Païs, on the Hérault side. You can head east towards Bédarieux or west back towards Mazamet. Either way, the terrain is manageable and the scenery changes at every bend. As an Accueil Vélo certified guesthouse, I know the route in both directions and can advise on the best stretches for your level and mood.

The Véloccitanie: going further
The Passa Païs forms the central section of the national cycle route V84, known as the Véloccitanie. This itinerary links Béziers to Montferrand over 200 kilometres, from one end of the Canal des 2 Mers à Vélo to the other. Cyclists looking to extend the adventure can continue a further 40 kilometres on the V84 down towards Béziers and EuroVelo 8, through the wine-growing hills of Faugères, with the sea on the horizon. A way to turn a short break into a proper cycling tour, with Le Clos d'Audio as your starting base or midpoint recovery stop.
